For the landscape drawings this week pastels were used. For
the first image the images was drawn at the university. The image is of trees in
front of the blue Richmond building and since it was autumn the leaves had
changed colour to yellow, orange, brown and red. This helped as there was a
clear contrast between the trees and building in the background. This was the
first time using pastels for me and it took 1 hour to draw the trees and the
building. Several colours were blended together and by having layer. Firstly
the trunk and the branches were drawn with a moss green colour and brown was
also slightly used. Then yellow was used to create the bottom layer for the
leaves. An orange pastel was ten used in the areas where the leaves were darker
or where there was not much light. Then using a finger the colours where
smudged together to give a better combination of colours and finally red was
used at the top of the trees to show some leaves that had turned that colour.
For this second drawing, this is part of my directed study,
shows a park where I went to draw. Pastels were also used for this drawing but
on this day the sun was shining and shadows were created by the trees. Also
many of the leaves had fallen of the many trees in the park because of the
season. This tree was drawn as it had a variety of colours such as yellow
orange and red and there was a contrast from the background which contained the
sky and trees which still had green leaves. This drawing incorporates the rule
of thirds which makes the tree with the yellow leaves stand out from anything else
in the drawing. When looking at the image the tree is the focal point and your
eyes moves along to the trees in the background and then all the way back to
the bottom left of the image where there is a tree stump covered by a bush.
This drawing took 1 hour and 5 minutes to complete.
