Week 9 - Basic Anatomy

Week 9 was the first week of life drawing and basic anatomy was being looked at.  Three quick one minute studies were done to show the basic anatomy of the model. The drawings are of the posterior, lateral and anterior. The basic shape of the body was captured but nothing else. More could have been done including having some lines to quickly map the main parts of the skeleton like the spine. This was the first life drawing session. There was a problem as hairy lines were used and the basic anatomy was not drawn quickly enough. This is why the head has not been drawn. The head should be the first part drawn.

The second drawing is of the model leaning and holding a stool which was not drawn.  For this drawing there are some planning line to show the spine and the legs. There is some good detail in the hair but the drawing does not show the model accurately. The model was leaning more than you see in the drawing and the hands and arms should be lower as the stool is not that tall. However there is good planning and this drawing could have been improved a lot more even by including some shading and having more of a curve in the spine. This was a 5 minute drawing.

The last drawing was completed in 25 minutes. The model is sitting on a table and the drawing is of her posterior. Measuring was used by holding a pencil at arm’s length to capture the head size. This was then used to map out the rest of the body compared to the head. The measurement was the body was 4 and a half length of the head. There is some good shading on the leg and the arm. For this drawing planning was also needed so the shoulder, spine, the leg and the arm have been mapped out. The spine is in its natural position so it is not casting as much shadows. There is a good amount of detail in the hair again but compared to the rest of the body the head was drawn too small.
