During this week we concentrated on composition in
landscapes. Firstly several quick sketches were made of the area around the
student Central building at the university. Each sketch was completed in 30
seconds and the best one was chosen to draw in a large scale on A3 paper. There
were some reasons why the fourth sketch was chosen including there was good
composition in the drawing, the light on the leaves was good and the rule of
thirds was well used in the sketch.
The location of the trees is at the top of the amphitheatre
at the university. The trees are on a hill so that is why in the drawing the
line is curved in the background. When looking at the drawing you eyes firstly
go to the tree with the large tree trunk as it is in the rule of thirds and it
is the main feature of the drawing. There is an implied line which goes from
the tree trunk up to the leaves, along them to the left and down along the tree
in the background. This is the direction your eyes go when looking at the
drawing. The leaves on the trees were different to the other trees in the area
so a different technique was used to draw them. I used a continuous line to
draw them as the leaves had more points on them and they were straight and long
compared to round leaved trees. There is also some hints of light that comes
through the trees and onto leaves from the left so that is why some of the
leaves appear to be lighter that some other parts.
